Jackson: Two part question here:
Part I: I seem to pick up the lead-in's, arpeggio's, etc… do well with the first verse but can't seem to get to learning the whole song holistically. I keep going back to the first coulpe of parts and don't fully learn the whole song. My wife has often commented and asked, "Great, but you need to play it all the way through." So, what is your recommendation on the best way to 'Put it All Together' and practice it so that I can play the whole song? Should I learn, one part at a time until I feel comfortable at putting it together or learn it the best I can all at once and struggle to play it all, until it gets better? What?
Part II: Any hints you can provide on trying to sing and play at the same time would be great as well. I find I'm a big 'Left-Hand Charlie' in this aspect and can't seem to concentrate on the playing and correct rhythm of the strumming and also focus on singing at the same time. Help!
Thanks,
Ken
Wow. That’s a tough question Ken. Having been a classroom teacher for 32 years, one thing I know is that virtually everyone has a unique learning style. And your second question sort of alludes to the answer that I would have given you. I would have suggested using the vocals to help tie everything together. But seeing as you are struggling with the vocal parts, that’s a moot point. I suppose if I were choosing, I would go with the first approach. Only because I think learning is best done in chunks. So, wait until you feel really comfortable with a section of the song, add the vocal if possible …. and then move to the next section. It may frustrate your wife and others who are listening to you practice … but hopefully it will garner the most success. As for the singing …. trying humming the melody while playing first so that remembering or reading the lyrics is not taking too much attention away at the onset.
OK JAckson,
I just want to join and learn. Please give me "how to get" song instructions and the what bill for them will be.
All the best,
Jerry
There are a few options Jerry! You can opt for a weekly subscription wherein youreceive either one or two songs per week OR you can choose the Premium Lifetime membership with instant access to over 200 lessons! Both plans are are offered at discounted rates from time to time. Cheers!
Jackson
wanted to work on blue Christmas found link on FGM but it doesn't seem to work all the other songs under rarities works but that one. Is it temporarily out of commission. BTW I really enjoy your lessons! Please let me know what is going on with the blue Christmas lesson. Have you thought about adding some other Christmas songs.

shortly after sighning up i quickly realized that i was in way over my abilty, Jackson always seemed like he was sittng right next to me cherring me on. have joined a lot of other websites to kick up my playing. this is the only one i not only keep going back to but the only one i still a part of.thanks jackson for many hours of the funnest frustration i have known , you truly are a menter
Thanks Ron … means a lot to me!
Hi Jackson what is the difference between Song Mentor R&R membership and the premium version?
Hi Thomas. The R&R program is a subscription program in which you receive access to a new lesson or two each and every week for as long as you are a member. The Premium program gives you full access to the entire song catalog instantly and forever. Hope that helps.
Love it, love, love it! Bill.
Thanks so much Bill!
Hi Jackson
I've been using your free lessons and this is the best site
i've come across and I can't wait to to get your premium membership
how do I subscribe.
Fran
OK, I'm an old guy who played in a couple of bands years ago, mainly 50's and 60's songs, but your free lessons have inspired me to once again to get in the groove. have played at local parties and functions during the last months and used your lessons, now you've got me hooked Jackson. Practice at least 2 hours nearly each day and can't say enough about your teaching style. I've learned more in the last 6 months from your tutorials than I could've hoped to accomplish on my own. I will sign for the lifetime membership this afternoon. Keep the tutorials coming. Thanks for your dedication, Don
Well Donald .. that’s exactly the kind of story I love to hear! Welcome to Song Mentor and congrats on the rebirth of music in your life!
Hi Jackson, I just became a member and was wondering is it possible to recieve lessons based on skill level, since I am a beginner?
Hi Thomas. All the songs have a 1-5 star rating with 1 being easiest and 5 most difficult. It’s simply a matter of checking the lesson to see what level it’s at. Subjective on my part of course but pretty accurate.
Hello Jackson,
I just received a message from PayPal that they sent you a payment of 79.95. I am courious what my membership status is. Do I have lifetime membership or yearly? Thanks in advance and I love all you do
Joe
What's the link to the monthly membership? I am taking lessons locally and don't want to buy a whole year's subscription until I've tried out your site. Thanks!
Hi Mike … just use the top subscribe button in this link:
http://songmentor.com/?page_id=443
How do I get to the page with the prices ??
Hi Lester! Click on the “Register Now” link at the top of the page.
I've been a member for quite a while and still love the site! Superior to anything else I've found on-line (and I've check out a lot).
How about a "Blackbird" lesson??
Keep 'em coming – Thanks, Dave
Thank you David. Blackbird is a great suggestion. My agenda is set but I will do what I can to fit it in.
Hello – as a month-to-month subscriber, is there an option to upgrade my membership to the Lifetime Premium? A great site!
Thanks Martin! And yes …. here’s the link you are after!
http://songmentor.com/?page_id=2473
Thanks Jackson for this great, affordable and well thought out site. Songs are great and the lessons are too. Very easy to follow. I’m glad to be a member.
Thanks so much David and welcome to Song Mentor!
Woo-hoo! Your absolutely spot-on "I Feel Fine" lesson is open for business (your comments about our also needing to note the vocal harmonies made a huge difference)! After tracking down the Shea Stadium footage I can see what you mean about George's alternate riff, too–it's a bit of a stretch playing this on a 12-string, and I'll take any option I can get. BEAUTIFUL SESSION! Any chance you might do a lesson on "And Your Bird Can Sing"? Thanks again for pulling all of this awesomeness together!
Thanks Doug …. always open to suggestions. I may be starting a program in a year or so that will be the equivalent to British Invasion Mentor ….. in that prgram I will have room for more Beatles and all those great groups!
Mace,
This is by far the best teaching website I have ever seen…and I am old!!! I just saw the Rascals live and thought of your Good Lovin' lessons. Felix is still using the same Wurlitzer and won't let the stage hands touch it! And it still rolls away from him while he is playing. Thanks again for this awesome site. I love your passion.
Andy Bednarik
Hi Jackson,
Since starting up Premium with you my playing has improved no end. I feel so cool being able to play the Eagles complete songs now. I even played infront of my friends for the first time and they were impressed. You have given me so much confidence I just want to learn and learn.
Any chance you could add Peace Train by Cat Stevens to the growing list of songs to cover please.
Many thanks Jackson,
Lyn.
Thanks again Lyn …. and good for you! Peace Train will definitely be considered.
I haven't been a member that long, but I'm lovin your site. I know you have a lot of requests, but if you could fit in Mr. Tamborine Man by the Byrds I'd love to learn how to play it. Much continued success.
Andy
Thanks so much Andy! I assume you mean the Byrds cover? I will do my best to fit that one in. I didn’t consider it because most people don’t own a 12 string which is a must for that one. Again …. thanks!
BILLYJACK. Thankyou very much for generosity, Your lessens or really good and easy to follow.I recommend your site to my guitar playing friends.
Thanks Billy! The word-of-mouth s really appreciated!
I am so glad I joined for life. You are a great teacher and I love the background you give on the songs. If you can some day, could you show Harrison's slides in " Give Me Love"?? Thanks again.
Andy
Thanks so much Andrew! No promises but I will certainly consider your request!
Hi Jackson, just signed up for Song Mentor Premium. After learning Desperado from one of the free songs I was hooked on your great teaching method. Together I just know I am going to go from strength to strength with the guitar. Thank you for all the great lessons and all those that are to come. I'm off now to learn Layla so I can impress my friends lol.
many thanks,
Lyn
Thanks Lyn …. welcome ….. and I agree …. go and impress the heck out of them!
Hi Jackson, I have been enjoying the Sunday songs and wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put into teaching guitar, you make it easy to progress and learn how to get the guitar to respond to simple inputs.
Thanks, Larry
Thanks so much Larry …. your support is genuinely appreciated!
Hi Jackson,
signed up for the free lessons after finding you and learning your tutorial on Desperado, great lesson. I'm interested in your SONG MENTOR PREMIUM! Do I need to be a member of any other part of your site first to be able to join this? Also, can you confirm it is a one off payment through Paypal for lifetime membership and no more money will be taken? Finally will I be missing out on anything with Premium over the monthly membership? Sorry so many questions but better know before hand than later lol.
Regards,
Lyn.
Hi Lyn! SONG MENTOR PREMIUM is indeed one payment only …. forever! There is nothing else to join and nothing else to pay later. And …. you won’t miss any content or lessons. In fact … it will guarantee that you have full access to all the music! Thanks for your interest and asking such good questions!
Great lessons, I really enjoy and look for every new lesson. Not everyone can teaching but you do.
Please on my progress I like to learn: I'll make believe it's you— Jim Cuddy
If you have time.
Thanks for the lessons
Much appreciated Henk and I’m pleased if you are making progress as well!
Mace,
Love your selections and teaching style, not to mention your enthusiasm for your trade. Thank you so much for sharing, and providing such a valuable resource.
Derrick
Thanks so much Derrick!
Continue to enjoy the program thanks
Thanks for the encouragement Gary!
Hey am I finaly in this is great.
Cheers Barney
Thanks Barney … glad you are enjoying!
Wow, How did I goof that up? Hey, thanks for the great website and thanks for the speedy reply. I truly appreciate both. Cheers, Mark
You are most welcome Mark!
Thanks for Song Mentor Premium!! I have learned more in just a few months than I had in years. Keep the songs coming because your teaching style is great.
One suggestion is there a way you can have a list of all the songs we can link to without having to use the previous or next button. It takes a long time to get to a song you are working on.
Thanks, Jackson for the great site!!!!!
Thanks so much Mark …. hopefully that’s solved now!
